Backwards Driving Leads To Criminal Charges In New Jersey

A Dover man who allegedly drove his car backwards with a flat tire attracted the attention of New Jersey police and ended the day with several criminal charges. At 3:45 p.m. on Aug. 10, New Jersey police say they saw a black Volkswagen Passat with a flat tire being driven in reverse down Franklin Road in Denville Township. The vehicle then drove over several curbs and bushes. When officers attempted to stop the car, the driver allegedly refused to stop.

Following a short chase, the officers stopped the car and apprehend the driver. A retired officer, who was near the scene and witnessed the incident, assisted with taking the man into police custody. Police allege that the man was under the influence; he also had numerous open warrants from several jurisdictions.

Placed in the Morris County Jail in lieu of $10 thousand bail, the driver now faces a number of criminal charges. Included in the charges are 22 motor vehicle violations, eluding police, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, speeding and driving while suspended. The driver is also facing a charge of refusing to submit to a Breathalyzer test.

When a person’s behavior or actions attract the attention of the police and the person ends up with charges of drug possession, a criminal defense attorney may be able to provide assistance and advice to the defendant. An attorney may look at all the activities of the individual and the police that led up to the charges. He or she may also review the actions of the police during the booking to make sure that everything was conducted as prescribed by law. The attorney may be able to help the accused person build a defense position when faced with criminal charges in court.
